Tyre Change and Puncture Repairs

We all know how annoying and inconvenient a punctured tyre can be, not to mention the impact this can have on your safety whilst driving.

That's why Crown Garage offer a puncture repair or tyre replacement service!

If you have a puncture, whether it's fast or slow, or you are in need of a new tyre, we have the tools to get you safely on the road again. We only deal with mid-range or branded tyres, to ensure maximum safety of your vehicles, and our puncture repair kits are built to last and withstand your every day driving needs, albeit short or long distance driving.

Tyre Replacement

Tyre Replacement

If you have a punctured tyre, pop in to Crown Garage for a repair!

We have a seating area where you can sit and wait, or alternatively, you can drop your car off and pick it up once the repair is all done.

A repair can only be safely completed if the damage meets strict limits regarding location, size, and the condition of the tyre.

The 3 Core Puncture Limits

  1. Location: The puncture must be within the central three-quarters (60-70% depending on the tyre width) of the tread, commonly referred to as the "minor repair area". Punctures, sidewalls, or edge shoulders are strictly off-limits for repair because these areas experience immense flex and stress.
  2. Hole Size: The diameter of the damaged area must be 6 mm or less. If the object that punctured the tyre (like a bolt or large piece of metal) leaves a hole bigger than this, the tyre must be replaced.
  3. Number of Repairs: If your vehicle uses tyres with a speed rating of V or higher, the tyre is eligible for only one puncture repair in its entire lifetime.

When a Tyre Cannot Be Repaired

Beyond the specific puncture criteria, a garage will refuse a repair and require a replacement if:

  • Tread Depth is Too Low: The remaining tread is below the UK legal limit of 1.6 mm.
  • Structural Damage: There are signs of "run-flat" damage, bulging, exposed cords, or severe cuts to the rubber.
  • Previous Faulty Repairs: Any existing patches are overlapping the new puncture, or previous fixes were not completed properly.

Tyre Replacement

Tyre Replacement

Tyre Replacement

You should change your tyres when the tread depth drops below the legal limit 1.6mm, when they show signs of cracking or damage, or if they reach 5–6 years of age. Tyres should always be replaced in pairs on the same axle to maintain safe handling and grip.

Key Warning Signs to Replace Tyres

  • Tread Depth: The minimum legal limit in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, we recommend replacing your tyres once the tread reaches 3mm to prevent a dramatic drop in wet-weather braking and handling.
  • Age: Even if the tread isn't worn, tyres degrade over time. Most we recommend replacing tyres when they are 5–6 years old, and any tyre over 10 years old should be removed from service entirely. You can find the manufacturing date (a 4-digit code) on the tyre's sidewall.
  • Visible Damage: Inspect your tyres regularly for cracks, cuts, bulges, or embedded objects (like nails or glass). A bulge in the sidewall is an immediate puncture hazard and requires an urgent replacement.
  • Uneven Wear: If you notice your tyres are wearing unevenly such as balding on the inner or outer edges, it indicates a wheel alignment or suspension issue. You should have the underlying mechanical fault fixed and the tyres replaced.

How to Check Your Tread Depth at Home

  • The 20p Test: Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread is likely below 3mm and you should consider a replacement.
  • Tread Wear Indicators: Look for the small raised rubber bars molded into the bottom of your tyre's grooves. If the tread surface has worn down to be level with these indicators, your tyre has hit the legal limit

Why is it important to regularly change your tyres?

MOT Failure

Police Action & Vehicle Prohibition

Fines and Penalty Points

Illegal tyres will automatically result in a failed MOT (Ministry of Transport) test. You will not be allowed to legally drive the vehicle on public roads until the issue is rectified and a passing test is completed.

Fines and Penalty Points

Police Action & Vehicle Prohibition

Fines and Penalty Points

Per-Tyre Penalties: Fines and points are applied individually to each illegal tyre on your vehicle. If all four tyres are deemed illegal, a court can impose a maximum fine of up to £10,000 and issue 12 penalty points, leading to an instant driving ban.

Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN): For less severe, first-time offences, police may issue a Fixed Penalty Notice resulting in an automatic fine and points.

Police Action & Vehicle Prohibition

Police Action & Vehicle Prohibition

Vehicle Unroadworthiness & Court Summons

If your tyres are severely worn, bulging, or have exposed cords, the police can issue a Prohibition Notice. This prevents you from driving the vehicle until the tyres are professionally replaced and proof is provided.

In extreme cases, police have the authority to impound the vehicle or initiate formal court proceedings, which risks a disqualification from driving altogether.

Vehicle Unroadworthiness & Court Summons

Vehicle Unroadworthiness & Court Summons

Driving a car with dangerous or defective tyres means you are operating an unroadworthy vehicle, which is an imprisonable offence in severe circumstances. Both the driver and the registered vehicle owner can receive a court summons if the vehicle fails to meet safety standards.

Insurance Invalidation

Vehicle Unroadworthiness & Court Summons

Insurance Invalidation

Accidents and Claims: If your illegal or defective tyres contribute to a road accident, your car insurance policy is likely to be invalidated. This means your insurance provider can refuse to pay out for any damage to your vehicle, third-party vehicles, or personal injuries.
